My guess is that it's not about the tax deduction in 
itself (although that certainly helps), it's about 
the receipt.

Companies very much like to generate a proper paper 
trail when they hand out money, and not only for the 
tax office. So it's probably easier to get a company 
to order a few hundred CDs instead of a donation.

(On the other side, I don't know how the incoming 
donations are handled by OpenBSD, but they most 
probably are also subject to taxation somewhere.)
