To avoid timeouts, I recommend you check out the FAQ [1] first before doing away with (Reverse) DNS. Distributing hosts files to your clients is of course a possibility, but I find DNS easier to setup. The default files in /var/named are pretty much good to go. Cheers, Rogier References: 1.
