I disagree on that, around 1GB to spare on / seems pretty comfortable
unless you're on a small-for-modern-standards disk. 

A couple of standard kernels at ~25MB each, maybe a kernel with
debug symbols (140M-odd), a couple of old ones while investigating problems,
/etc/firmware, it adds up, and the files typically on / can't be split
out into a second filesystem.
