Perhaps I should have given the subject "Samsung M3 1TB external USB3
HDD is not detected with OpenBSD 6.7 & 6.8".

I realize this problem is difficult to diagnose and fix without my
specific hardware but I am happy to do any necessary diagnostic steps.
I probably won't be able to fix the problem myself but at least it
might be useful if anyone else has a similar USB3 controller. In the
thread "Supported PCI USB 3 Cards" 27/11/20 Theo said "All PCI USB
cards should work fine". Of course I don't expect every card to work
in all cases.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot system with USB hard drive connected to USB 3.0 port on rear panel.
2. Run 'dmesg | grep sd' to list detected disks.

I am looking for Samsung, M3 Portable, 1301 here. You can see that
when properly detected it shows up as sd2 on my system as I have two
SATA disks installed.

I have found the following information about this PCI-E USB3 controller:

It is really an NEC / renesas uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller and is
found on several motherboards made by Zotac, Gigabyte etc.

I found this page on AskUbuntu where somebody fixed an issue by
updating the firmware on the card but I don't know if this applies to
built-in chips on the motherboard. I'm also not sure if it matches my
model and whether to trust the file download provided.

In any case booting to windows and flashing the card may not be a
solution for everyone especially those using open-source systems.

When the drive is connected to a USB 2.0 port it works as expected. In
that case it is using the AMD / ATI chipset: ATI, EHCI root hub.

If anyone is able to help me try to find a solution to this issue
please contact me directly and I will copy the list. I have a current
system that I can test with as well but it needs upgrading to the
latest snapshot.

In the meantime I think I will try connecting other USB devices to
confirm if anything at all is detected as I have so far only used the
USB 3.0 ports with this drive.

If the firmware is the issue I would be interested in any suggestions
as to where I might search for an official firmware download as I
cannot find one from renasas or NEC.
