PEBKAC: The "prefork" directive followed the table definitions, which is the wrong order according to relayd.conf(5). As soon as I moved it up things worked. I suspect that "prefork 3" worked even in the wrong position because it is the default value that does not change anything. Sorry for the noise, Marcus
