This is current/amd64 on a Thinkpad T400 (dmesg below).
It has two RAM slots; each holds a 8GB module,
but dmesg only shows 8GB in total.
With just one module in (either one), dmesg reports 4GB.
So it seems the system only sees 4GB of every 8GB.
Is that a known limitation?
On another amd64 machine, the 8+8 is seen as 16.
Is this related to the "extent `pcimem'" lines in the dmesg?
