Me's configured a pair of consecutive softraid(4) partitions in concat mode. Sees relatively light use, but performance has been adequate. Previously, meused crypto w/ a passphrase of '0' (automagically read from a file at boot), but that was just needlessly complicated. Fixing vnd(4) to work on devices, or just adding a 'concat-of-1-volume' (perhaps call it 'L'ayer) "level" to softraid, is what me'd recommend. But that doesn't seem to help Groot (right now).
