I never checked memory usage. But 20 messages per second is slow, I think. My Linux machine had 4 GB RAM and mu4e was still very slow on OpenBSD. My solution was to use an SSD drive. The speed of mu4e on an OpenBSD with SSD drive is roughly the same as a Linux with mechanical hard drive. So for me it was either pay to use SSD on OpenBSD or use Linux and a cheaper hard drive.
