I had some similar troubles with my T400 when installing 6.6 a couple of months back.
I had to ensure that I was using integrated graphics, and it worked fine. So you could try altering the bios graphics setting (under Config/Display) to "Integrated Graphics". Also ensure you have run fw_update. I'm now running with -current as it's working happily on whatever bios setting is chosen, with either inteldrm (integrated) or radeondrm (discrete). So, my main "tip" is that if 6.6-release doesn't work for you, give -current a shot (run sysupgrade -s). All the best.
