If you look in src/sys/dev/acpi you will see acpithinkpad.c which has functions for a bunch of getters and setters and buttons, etc. If you look in linux, there's going to be a similar file somewhere, and next to it will be an acpidell.c file which will have some magic numbers in it... This is all pretty hands on stuff.
