Aside from getting exploited by the latest OpenSSL bug (ok, LibreSSL has done a great job lowering this probability!), the other big benefit is that crappy providers and Wi-Fi hotspots can't inject notifications and advertising into HTTPS links, at least not the way things are setup today..
