Ok. Try this. Power-off you machine, unplug the cable from the network card and boot the machine with the latest -current snapshot. Look for "firmware handshake" error message. It seems like that Broadcom network cards, if not initialized properly (this could've happened when you booted 3.8), have to be re-initialized properly in order to function again. This happened on my IBM e326m and the above approach solved the problem.
