Hi Christoph,

thanks for your report. The value of "mouse.type" doesn't refer to
the X driver, it's a description of the model, so it's correct in
this case (the inventory of type names and IDs is not quite up-to-date,
sometimes the value can be misleading).

I assume that your touchpad is actually running with ws, and that no
xorg ".conf" file - in /etc or in /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ -
overrides the default ;-) If that is the case, then "works-as-before"
is a good result, I had no intention to break user expectations.

There are probably only minor differences in the default configurations.
As to the behaviour, I hope you can observe a higher precision when
navigating at low speeds (the default filtering in synaptics(4) is from
an era that required more drastic measures to produce acceptable
results). With touchpads that report multi-touch data, the new driver
should provide a better gesture identification, including a kind of
"thumb detection" on clickpads, but this does not apply to Synaptics
models handled by pms(4) (the device firmware processes the MT inputs
in this case). Maybe you want give it a try on your MacBook, which has
MT support ;-)

I'm not sure what your comparison is based on. I remember that some
reviewers were unhappy with the touchpads of the w540 series, especially
because of the button handling. Or do you refer to the fact that there
is no support for "smooth" scrolling? (The classical scroll-method is
event-based, that is, wheel movements on a mouse - or scroll gestures
on a touchpad - are translated into a series of button events, which is
coarse compared to coordinate-based scrolling.)

Ulf
