As to the behaviour, I hope you can observe a higher precision when navigating at low speeds (the default filtering in synaptics(4) is from an era that required more drastic measures to produce acceptable results). With touchpads that report multi-touch data, the new driver should provide a better gesture identification, including a kind of "thumb detection" on clickpads, but this does not apply to Synaptics models handled by pms(4) (the device firmware processes the MT inputs in this case).
