Unless you change build options, compiling from ports is like spending time to hand tailor a suit that is the same in every respect to one that is factory-produced. The whole point of the base system build system and the ports framework is to provide an easy way to produce the same thing each time from a small number of commands. And if you do change build options, any time you might have saved, will totally evaporate the first time you run into some problem that's the result of a misoptimization.
