This is a complete guess, but is /etc/myname a symbolic link? If it is a symlink to an absolute path, that is unlikely to exist in the bsd.rd filesystem and would cause this error.
If that's not it, please clarify what you mean by the "file is there". What command did you run, and what was its output? What sort of file is it? And is sd0 the correct disk?
