1) What is there to be confused about?  Try a different cvs mirror or
try again later.  Probably heavy load from everyone trying to pull
-stable at once.

2) AFAIK, the patch branch and the stable branch are one and the same.
 Note that these may not necessarily be the same as the release branch
with errata patches applied.
