Well, it is done. Thanks to the FAQ writer (Nick?) and other information in the FAQ (well done), all the people who reminded me about the boot process and boot install and all the people who suggested the TMPDIR for the dump / restore problem (that was it).
The new drive is up, running smoothly so far... :) I also learned a good amount doing this. If I forgot to thank anyone, consider yourself thanked also.
