I have a Lenovo G50-70 running the 5.7 stable.amd GENERIC.MP I am humble enough to admit that I was also baffled by a blank screen, seemingly no keyboard, no mouse, no error messages ... and I had to ask for help too. The solution may be as simple as tappng the "brightness" button a few times on the keyboard. It's the F12 button on my laptop. See also: localhost> man xbacklight
