several people with the same laptop don't have this problem. don't think it's
hardware.

this is classic "no DNS" behavior though. X really, really, really wants to
know your hostname forwards and backwards and sideways and if it doesn't get
what it wants, you get to wait until it does...

I'd look into your network config.
