When I used phone line modems there were modems _with_ fax capabilities
and some _without_. Possibly the same applies for those
GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA/LTE/DARNWHATSILLYACRONYMS modems?

Sorry, no. But I can confirm failure. Are you sure "AT+GCAP" is the
right command? I'd be interested in such a fax-capable device as well...
