Thank you for taking the trouble. My thoughts? This is a bit of the kind of code you'd write in an introduction to device drivers or an OS programming class. As others have said, really old news, and an indication of the kind of trash an industry led by Intel and Microsoft has foisted on the world. Attempts to handle it in software are not very useful, other than just shutting the port off completely in a re-flashed BIOS.
I've used it on the Mac (PPC) and been impressed by the convenience and glad my house was not at the time a place I needed to worry about people messing with my hardware. And you're wondering why I blame Microsoft and Intel? I suppose they weren't the first to engage in feature warfare. But they sure took it to extremes and have never been willing to give it up. And they have always been all too willing to use any attempt by other companies to be responsible about this kind of thing as a weak point to attack. And destroy. Yeah, it's sort of inconvenient that openbsd doesn't support firewire. Sort of, but, ... .
