Going OT here to correct that impression...

HP/UX, AIX and UnixWare/OpenServer all support LDAP authentication without going through the PAM layer.

Theoretically, any BSDauth-enabled OS could do so but most others (NetBSD, FreeBSD) take the, umm... "easy" way out and do it through PAM.
