Find stuff that doesn't work properly and figure out what's going on. Even without code, complete *reproduceable* bug reports are invaluable resources. (hint: anything that dumps cores is a bug). Pretty soon, you'll find you can actually dive into code and figure things out. Also, working on ports has a lower entry barrier than some other parts of the system...
