  The heavy-handed approach... the firewall boots from either CD ROM

or USB stick http://www.volkerroth.com/tecn-obsd-diskless.html and send
log data to a remote machine that is on a UPS.  Since nothing gets
written to the boot media during operation, fsck is not required.
