I am using wpa-supplicant with wired 802.1X at work and I do start it from hostname.if(5). But keep in mind that this means that you've got to store your password in cleartext somewhere on your disk. This is the one and only case I see the need for a network manager who's capable of talking to some sort of keyring like gnome does it. Frank.
