I tend to do that myself when for one reason or the other I want to do a complete reinstall with a mind to rebuild the system much like before. But for the booting from i386 bsd.rd question, it's a little unclear to me what you are asking about. You will need to have the i386 install sets available somewhere, but that somewhere could be any number of places, even the OpenBSD mirror you fetched the bsd.rd from. If you're thinking about reusing filesystem layout, that should be fairly easy but any leftover amd64-specific files will not be useful on i386, so a total wipe (newfs) on all partitions is the cleaner way.
