Compression is broken on (S)hell booting install52.iso

When using (S)hell from live cd installer,

# gzip something > file.gz
gzip: compression not supported

# tar -jcvf archive.bz2 something
tar: could not exec bzip2: No such file or directory

Is this intentional?
