Oh, ok. How can I do this without being dropped into the debugger then?
Is wdc likely to do better? From reading man pages I understood that I
had to use atapiscsi with pciide.

pciide(4) isn't the only driver that talks to IDE controllers. If you
disable it, the system should use wdc(4) instead.
