I've been trying to get my Atheros-based wifi working and not having any luck at all. I've read ath(4) and ifconfig(8), and I've searched the archives.

I'm trying to connect to an open (no WEP, no MAC filter) 11b network on channel 6, and no matter what I try I end up with "Status: no network" from `ifconfig ath0' and it's dead in the water. `ifconfig ath0' *will* show correct chan, bssid, etc., but always no network. Since it's filling in parameters that I haven't set (bssid, channel) it *must* be seeing the access point. I've tried simple dhclient, and tried specifying addr/netmask.

I'm dual booting and wifi works fine w/linux. This is about the last hurdle before I single boot this with openbsd, and I'd appreciate any help! Dmesg follows...

Have you tried something like:

ifconfig ath0 media DS1 mode 11b nwid <ssid> nwkey 0x0123456789

I don't have the same card as you but a 3Com dito, i think. My hostname.ath0 looks like:

dhcp NONE NONE NONE media DS1 mode 11b nwid <myssid> nwkey 0x0123456789

/stefan

Thanks for the quick replies and especially for the concrete suggestions.

Yes, I've tried hostname.ath0 with
dhcp NONE NONE NONE media autoselect mode 11b nwid decoy
and
dhcp NONE NONE NONE media DS1 mode 11b nwid decoy
and
dhcp NONE NONE NONE media DS11 mode 11b nwid decoy
and other combinations with more or less options.

Tried with ifconfig, with various combinations, such as `ifconfig ath0 media autoselect mode 11b nwid decoy up'...

`ifconfig ath0' gives:

ath0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        lladdr 00:90:4b:dc:0c:b6
        media: IEEE802.11 autoselect mode 11b (DS1 mode 11b)
        status: no network
ieee80211: nwid decoy inet6 fe80::290:4bff:fedc:cb6%ath0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2

or

ath0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        lladdr 00:90:4b:dc:0c:b6
        media: IEEE802.11 autoselect mode 11b (DS1 mode 11b)
        status: no network
ieee80211: nwid decoy chan 6 bssid 00:0c:41:67:3b:71 inet6 fe80::290:4bff:fedc:cb6%ath0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2

I see it picks up the bssid and channel correctly. But always "status: no network"

I've tried dhclient and fixed addresses with ifconfig.
