I would ilke to offer storage options (perhaps an email server), and I > know the Soekris don't have regular HDs. You can put a HDD in a Soekris. In fact I run all mine that way. Mainly because I think flash is a bad use for a longterm massstorage device. All an "appliance" really is is a box that does one thing has few to no knobs and "just works" out of hte box. Hardware doesn't really matter. The only real reason you see so many of them on samll form factor type boxen is cost. For example I use Soekris when I sell perimeter security devices but that's simply because they are cheap to buy and to run. No other real reason. For a small form factor mail server I'd look at a shuttle type system.
