I have a new Compaq 100B on which I've installed 4.9 amd64 (dmesg below).
Everything seems to work fine except the network. The network is giving
me results so strange I'm struggling to understand what could be going
wrong, even given that Realtek 8101E does not show on the list of supported
hardware.

If I ping another machine from the Compaq and run tcpdump on the target
machine, I see the echo request packets arrive on the other machine, but
echo replies never leave that machine. The target machine is receiving
packets but not acting on them. There seems to be "something wrong" with
the packets -- they arrive at the target machine but have no effect. The
target machine is not running any internal firewall, everything else on
the network can ping it just fine.

If I ping from another machine and run tcpdump on the Compaq, I see both
echo request and echo reply packets, but no results appear on the other
machine.

It's not as if the other machine is not acting on any packets at all.
Pinging from the other machine, the arp reply works. So arp replies
have an effect, icmp echo requests don't. (And neither do e.g. ssh tcp
packets.)

Anyone have any suggestions?

The behavior happens both when booted from the hard disk and (S)hell from
the install CD. Deleting default route does not change anything.

-Thanks in advance, Jim
