Quality has nothing to do with it, if the driver does not support the chip, the card won't work. The wikipedia page you mention and the ath(4) manual agree about the list of supported chips: AR5210, AR5211, and AR5212. Nobody has sent in a working diff for the newer ath5k devices that doesn't break other cards yet.
