I you are looking for documentation about the design you could either read: The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System, which is a bit old but still valid. A new book that could be interesting is: The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System , which focus on FreeBSD but is still valid.
