Accidentaly, I am recording at this very moment from a firewire audio interface (using another OS) and the device does not provide any mixer controls in software. Only the hardware buttons on the box. This fact is confirmed by the docs of the device.
So, I would not be surprised that this is possible with USB audio devices too.
