Related to that, the old HP/Compaq Remote Insight Board products work well in non-Compaq hardware, and give remote access to KVM (web/Java interface) and serial (Java or ssh). http://webdevsys.com/lightsOut.htm has a pretty good description, if you buy one via eBay make sure you get the keyboard dongle, and if you want to do remote power you'll need the external power adapter and the virtual power cable.
