OK Hold everything. I'm not sure why, but my PF firewall seems to have something to do with this.
(Goodness knows how, it's been working all ths time). All I can think is that I made some config error that is only causing me problems now. Not sure. In any case, my next little project will be to go through pf.conf with a fine tooth comb until I find the error. Thanks to all who replied.
