Absolutely ages ago I found http://www.opensound.com/ and was able to use one of their drivers under OpenBSD 2.x. They're still going and their supported (for Linux[1]) list has a "Soundblaster 5.1 (Dell)". It says that you can download the driver (I believe it's a LKM) for free for personal/non-commerical use so it might be worth a try. [1] they say other OS's drivers might not support everything.
