Too bad.  It _is_ a bad feature and _should_ go away, since usernames
permit periods.  Permitting both the dot in chown and the dot in
usernames seems wrong to me.

IMHO, *either* the man pages and the allowed chars in a username should
be altered, *or* the chown program, so that it understands no '.',
but just the ':'
