I have uploaded all of my sendmail config files and maillog and even a
copy of the error message that is returned to the sender.
I don't know how to make it so the recipient addresses don't become
@internal.host... when it reaches internal.host...

What are the values of:
MASQUERADE_AS()
MASQUERADE_DOMAIN()
in your .mc file?
