fwiw, I see something similar with Ralink (GN-WIKG MiniPCI) - every time I 'ifconfig ral0 down' with 'mediaopt hostap', I get this:

I haven't seen this happen with 'mediaopt ibss', nor does it happen with hostap made from a PRISM3 wi.
Sorry, it's on a 4526-20 at the moment, so it's a custom flashboot kernel (16MB soldered flash doesn't leave too much space for a normal installation) - if it will help, I can probably move the card into a 4801 running GENERIC.
