Hello Everyone, No, this is not a "why isn't my SATA RAID supported." I wanted to find out some more information on this subject though. From what I understand most of the SATA raid setups use a bios or software raid configuration.
Most do require an OS driver, so it's a lot better to use RAIDFrame (we do it all the time). Only downside is that you can't easily boot from the array, so normally we use root & altroot as separate partitions from the array.
This would seem like a complete WASTE of time and energy to manufacture.
Confirmed! Unfortunately, the Windoze marketplace easily supports brain-dead 'fake' RAID - it *is* very cost effective.
What are some real hardware cards that support SATA raid aside from adaptec? Thanks guys, just trying to learn.
I believe LSI/Megaraid is the only fully supported HW controller (with status available via OS). Adaptec has refused to share documentation on current products, so they are no longer 'officially' supported. There are other h/w controllers that have drivers and will operate, but they are only supported at the 'BIOS' level and do not have any management available. (The problem with that is you have to watch the disk lights to detect a drive failure - something hard to do if the server is remote.)
