I believe that the best way to learn OS is examinig the source code, for BSD Operating System there are some books availables.
1.- The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System by Marshal Kirk McKusick, Keith Bostic, Michael J. Karels, John S. Quarterman 2.- Code Reading .- Diomidis Spinellis, Addisson Wesley: help to learn code, BSD specific. 3.- The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System by Marshall Kirk McKusick, George V.
