Yes, it is a string compare.

I would argue that the native package is breaking packaging guidelines. Source0 is not valid. The comments declare it is a hg checkout, but do not provide the commands to replicate the tarball as required. You can open a bug against the package and depending on the attitude of the maintainer they may change to use the upstream tarball that you use, but they may not.
