In Daniel Suarez' ingenious 2006 tech
thriller Daemon, a famous high-tech captain of industry
(think Steve Jobs) creates a daemon which is able to discover when
he dies (by reading news reports). His daemon cannot be destroyed
because it exists in multiple copies in the cloud, and can respond
adaptively to attacks. After his death, the daemon initiates all
kinds of havoc in the real world, beginning with murdering his
enemies.
