It looks like scons/gallium.py already defines DEBUG and NDEBUG: cppdefines = [] if env['build'] in ('debug', 'checked'): cppdefines += ['DEBUG'] else: cppdefines += ['NDEBUG'] So this may not even break the SCons build.
