What kind of documentation do you have in mind ? IMHO "see how your
distribution builds 32bit 'stuff'" is the best one :)

I think just some info telling people to use

    --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu

instead of --enable-32-bit would be sufficient.

Definitely.  I hate having to hunt down obscure stuff like that.
