This piece of information may be out of date. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/06/c99-acknowledged-at-last-as-microsoft-lays-out-its-path-to-c14/ It appears that C99 designated initializers are on Microsoft's roadmap. Generally their stance seems to have changed from "support C90 and the C subset of C++" to "support C90, the C subset of C++ and C features that ffmpeg uses".
