I wanted to do more benchmarks and possibly try to produce better solution than my initial patches, but I had no time for this yet. I think there is big potential for performance improvements, though I'm still not sure how it could affect different hardware and different applications, that's why I decided to look into it more thoroughly later. But I think restoring the old way is safe. I'm OK with this patch too.
