Dylan suggested you use pip --user to install a newer version of Mako. Is that a workable solution to your problem? I'm having a hard time getting excited about making upstream support building against 2011-era software, when doing so makes transitioning to Python 3 harder (which is useful for forward-looking distros). Especially when Debian stable and the last two Ubuntu LTS releases (2016 and 2014) ship a recent enough version...it's just the LTS three back (2012) that doesn't work... --Ken
