I encourage you to file a bug report on Debian bug tracker (and please
Cc me), stating the hard incompatibility. The package is done

trivial for people which are used to the process (automatic update
from pypi.org is possible).

It seems I have been fuzzy : version 11.1 made it to Debian unstable indeed on May 22nd, and then went to the current Debian testing, see https://packages.debian.org/trixie/mercurial-evolve

The versions in Debian stable (bookworm), namely Mercurial 6.3, Evolve 10.5.3 compatible according to the Evolve changelog.

The problem seems to be that Ubuntu 24.04 got Mercurial 6.7.2, but not the matching Evolve version. Hence sorry to waste your time, but the correct place to report it should be the Ubuntu issue tracker.

Unrelated, but Debian unstable now has Mercurial 6.8, and I see that the matching Evolve should be 11.1.4… More coordination seems to be needed, however I cannot do much about it right now.

Best,
